Glasgow’s Braehead Clan took Fife Flyers to overtime in Kirkcaldy, but were edged to defeat as John Tripp’s side took a point on the road.
The Flyers were one of the in-form teams, having gone 12 games unbeaten in all competitions and seven straight wins.
They had to act quickly in the opening minute when Clan broke on a two-on-one chance, but Jim Jorgensen made the vital block to deny them.
The first period with no goals to show for their efforts in something of a subdued occasion, but fairly soon that was to change.
Chase Schaber tested Ryan Nie in Clan’s goal with an opportunity after finding himself in a one-on-one situation.
But Braehead were the team to go ahead after 25 minutes when Brendan Brooks’ shot form point was tipped in by Mike Embach on the powerplay.
Flyers levelled themselves with a man advantage soon after as Carlo Finucci got a shot on goal that beat Nie and both teams were level.
It was another powerplay opportunity that saw the home side take the lead as Christoffer Bjorklund sat for interference.
Only 11 seconds had passed when Evan Bloodoff fired his shot home as the Kirkcaldy side edged themselves in front after two periods.
As time ticked down, Clan pulled Nie in the final couple of minutes and the gamble paid off with Adam Brace netting to take the game to overtime.
But Bloodoff’s second of the game in the extra period killed off Braehead’s hopes of taking both points away, with the two teams set to meet up again in Glasgow tomorrow.
