Former Braehead Clan defenceman Kevin Phillips says his old team’s signing of ex-team mate Craig Peacock is a statement of intent.

Peacock, who played with Phillips at Belfast Giants in the 2009/10 season then again between 2013 and 2015, was confirmed as the Clan’s latest signing as Ryan Finnerty builds his team for the new campaign.

And Phillips, who has just signed a new deal with EPL side Guildford Flames, has backed his old pal to succeed in Glasgow.

He said: “I’m sure the Purple Army will love him. He’s a player that knows where the net is and will score plenty of goals for them.

“They’ll be certainly be glad to have him on board for next season and Braehead getting him can be seen as a statement of intent. Peaks is one of the top Brits and potentially one of the top guys in the league.

“The fact he was leaving Belfast was a bit of a surprise, but it’s hockey and these things happen. But I’m sure it’s exciting for him and for me, it’s a good fit for both parties.

“He’ll be a go-to guy there and it’s a huge signing for Clan, who seem to have got better every year and adding Peaks is a great move.”

Peacock arrives in Scotland after two seasons where Giants underachieved by their standards, finishing fifth and fourth respectively.

Phillips reckons that will have disappointed him and perhaps sees a move to Braehead as a way of finding more success and gave an insight into what the Purple Army can expect from.

He added: “Belfast’s league positions in the league the last couple of seasons will have disappointed him and anyone that knows him knows he’s a born winner.

“He’s won trophies in Belfast and Peterborough and I’ve no doubt he’ll look to get back to winning ways with the Clan.

“Most of the fans will realise that having seen ‘Peaks’ playing for the Giants, he’s a proven guy in the league with more than just scoring ability.

“He wasn’t afraid to get into the corners and into the dirty areas. He works hard and I can’t speak highly enough about what he can do, having played with and against him.”
