ON THIS DAY: September 23rd

September 23, 2021

We’re probably travelling the furthest in terms of road trips as we look back on games from the past in Clan’s history.

We start in Dundee, pop into Nottingham then finish in Guildford as we rack up the miles to bring you what happened on this day.

Seatbelts on and let’s go again

GAMES

2012: Dundee Stars 2 Braehead Clan 1 (Challenge Cup)

Dundee was the destination for a 2012 clash between the two Scottish sides and under Jordan Krestanovich, Clan were still looking to make an impression.

The trip to Tayside is never one to be taken lightly and so it proved to be when Braehead visited Jeff Hutchins’ team looking for both Challenge Cup points.

It was a tight game and Clan looked to gain the early advantage, but couldn’t find a way past home goalie Nic Riopel, outshooting the Stars 16-7 after the first period.

Dundee, despite being under the cosh, managed to break the deadlock after 26 minutes when Doug Krantz finished the assist from former Clan player Mike Wirll.

There was no advancement on the score until the 55th minute when AJ MacLean converted and it gave them the breathing room they needed.

A late, late consolation from Robert Farmer was as good as Clan could muster, despite going on to outshoot their opponents by almost double.

2017: Nottingham Panthers 3 Glasgow Clan 5 (Elite League)

After bringing you a good win in Nottingham yesterday from 2018, we’re bringing you another one today, this time from 2017 when Clan were there in Corey Neilson’s last year in charge.

It was a fascinating contest, but one where Clan held off a strong Panthers challenge to record a well deserved two points.

Evan Mosey opened the scoring for Nottingham, which was cancelled out by Mike Embach before Josh Shalla restored Panthers’ lead before the break.

Clan kicked on in the second period with Matt Haywood, Brendan Brooks and Adam Brace all on target to put the visitors 4-2 ahead.

Panthers pulled one back through Ollie Betteridge, but a late empty net finish from Brooks, for his second, made sure of the points for John Tripp’s side.

2018: Guildford Flames 2 Glasgow Clan 0 (Elite League)

Journeys to Guildford weren’t only long ones, they were also largely unsuccessful and if you look at Clan’s record in Surrey, you’ll see exactly what we mean.

Sadly, it’s not any different on this occasion as Pete Russell’s Clan team visited the Spectrum and not only suffered defeat, but were blanked in the process too.

While there was only two goals in the game, Clan were never out of the game, but happened to be up against former goalie Travis Fullerton, who seemed to save his shutouts for his former team.

Swedish defenceman Calle Ackered put the Flames in front after 15 minutes and it seemed like a wall came down as Fullerton did his part to preserve the net.

Jesse Craige added a second to make doubly sure than Glasgow wouldn’t find this easy and in the end, it’s how it proved to be as Clan couldn’t do anything with their 43 shots on goal, including 22 in the third period.
