THIS WEDNESDAY the Nottingham Panthers visit Braehead Arena (7.30 pm) face-off.
Nottingham have found their stride recently as they look to try and have a late-season surge for the title. With 15 points taken from their last 10 games (good enough for second in the form table behind last Sunday’s opponents Coventry Blaze) and the Sheffield Steelers dropping points at the top of the table the EIHL title race is ON!
Can Clan throw a spanner in the works and defeat the Panthers for the third time this season?
Let’s take a look at their roster to try to identify some of the danger men looking to foil Zack Fitzgerald’s game plan…
Sam Herr
The left-winger is currently leading the league on points with 52 from 41 EIHL matches (1.27 PPG), Sam Herr has been a terror to Elite League defences in his inaugural campaign since joining the Panthers from the AHL’s Ontario Reign in the summer.
Sam’s 27 goals are almost double his nearest teammates Justin Talbot and Brett Perlini who have 14 goals to their name this season. It’s also good enough to be second in the EIHL’s scoring charts – one single goal from Luke Ferrara (which Clan fans will, unfortunately, be all too aware of after his goal on Sunday) separating the two.
Mark Matheson
The league’s highest point-scoring defenceman this season with 42 (9 goals and 33 assists), Mark Matheson switched allegiances this season between bitter rivals the Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers in the summer, and it’s a move that has proved fruitful for him and Nottingham.
He’s currently the only defenceman in the top 10 of the league, and is a real danger on the Powerplay.
Kevin Carr
Another player who’s having a great first season in the Elite League, 29-year-old netminder Kevin Carr joined the Panthers in the summer from the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL. He’s currently third in the save percentage charts with a 0.920, behind C.J Motte of the Blaze and Shane Owen of the Giants.
An impressive goal against tally of 2.28 puts him at the second-best in the league behind the aforementioned Shane Owen who only pips him with a 2.26 total.
Can the Clan stop the above? Find out THIS WEDNESDAY!
