NEWS: Glasgow Clan Joins the Great Canadian Kilt Skate

The Glasgow Clan is proud to partner with the Scottish Society of Ottawa (SSO) for their annual Great Canadian Kilt Skate, held across 15 communities in Canada and the USA, including Toronto, Calgary, and Petawawa in Renfrew County. To celebrate this magnificent event, Renfrewshire in Scotland will host its own Kilt Skate at Braehead Arena.
On Saturday, February 8th, Braehead Ice Centre will welcome skaters to a special Kilt Skate event before the Glasgow Clan take on the Fife Flyers in a Scottish Derby. To mark the occasion, free skate entry and skate hire will be offered to those who wear a kilt during the public skating sessions.
At the Glasgow Clan game, the festivities will continue with a special performance of ‘Flower of Scotland’ by a piper, and Renfrewshire Provost Lorraine Cameron will be in a attendance for a ceremonial puck drop. The Clan will proudly wear their home Purple Tartan Jersey for the game.
Renfrewshire Provost Lorraine Cameron said: “I’m delighted that we are participating in the Great Canadian Kilt Skate 2025.
“We are very proud of our twin town partnership with the county of Renfrew and hope this first official collaboration is the start of a great friendship between our countries.
“It’s going to be an exciting weekend here, and I’m particularly honoured to be asked to drop the puck at the game between the Glasgow Clan and the Fife Flyers.
“I hope everyone taking part in Kilt Skate has a great time.”
The connection between Scotland and Canada runs deep, with five current Clan players—Mitchell Heard, Darien Kielb, Cole Ully, Keaton Jameson, and Steven Seigo—hailing from areas hosting Kilt Skates. This celebration highlights the strong Celtic ties between the two nations, as Canadians embrace Scottish traditions by donning kilts on the ice while Scots enjoy Canada’s national sport, ice hockey.

The Kilt Skate is not the only way the Glasgow Clan and Renfrewshire have worked together to promote ice skating and cultural events. In November, the Clan teamed up with Renfrewshire County to launch their seasonal ice rink, bringing festive fun to the community. The event was made even more special with a performance from the Maryann McCreadie School of Dance, showcasing Scotland’s rich cultural heritage.
