NEWS: Clan players enjoy their Highland fling

September 22, 2023

Over 1,500 fans were in attendance as the Glasgow Clan, sponsored by Aspray Glasgow West, marked the start of the new season in fun fashion.

Braehead Arena played host to the Highland Ice Games, a night of fun and friendly competition as the 2023/24 team were formally introduced to the Purple Army – an event which proved to be a massive success.

It was also a good night of fundraising, with £2,648 raised for the Renfrewshire Food Bank, thanks to proceeds from tickets sales and this donation will be made in Mike Hammond’s name on behalf of Glasgow Clan.

They were split into two teams, led by Clan captain Dyson Stevenson and last season’s top scorer Gary Haden where the players participated in a number of Highland Games-style challenges.

Haggis throwing and tossing the caber were involved along with a relay race and a three-on-three game where points were accumulated.

Even the fans were involved as the traditional Chuck a Puck contest was given an extra edge, where the fan who won with their lucky throw got to award a point to the team of his choice – Clan Stevenson or Clan Haden.

It was the captain’s side who came through the festivities, winning the overall contest 10-5 in a night widely enjoyed by the Clan support who helped make the event a great success.

Once the games were completed, the Purple Army were treated to a first look of the new 2023/24 jerseys, modelled by Stevenson (home), Ryan Harrison (away) and Jake Bolton (alternate grey).

Then it was the formal introduction of the players, leaving the big crowd entertained as they anticipate the start of the new season, beginning this weekend.

Winning captain Dyson Stevenson revealed the competitive edge may have came out of one or two of his team.

“It was a good night and good to get the fans out,” he said.  “It’s just cool to get the team together, have some fun plus show off the new jerseys and let everyone see the guys.

“Winning the night was a lot of fun too and I think we had a couple of try-hards in my team that helped us out.

“We’re pleased no-one got hurt and that everyone enjoyed it so now attention turns to the game on Saturday against Fife and playing for the games that matter.

Haden added: “It was a lot of fun, although I came out the wrong end of it, but it was good to see everyone come along and be involved.

“Everyone has had a really good time.  I’m certainly not going to say anything about Dyson after this as you always have to stay on the good side of the captain.

“I didn’t expect so many people to show up, but all the guys are now back on the same side and it’s go time on Saturday.”

Please note: New jerseys will not be available on merch stall this Saturday, but orders are presently being taken online by clicking here.
