SIGNED: Hammond becomes a Clan man
NEXT HOME GAME: The 2015/16 Elite League champions, the Sheffield Steelers and Zack Fitzgerald are visitors to Braehead Arena THIS FRIDAY (7:30pm face-off), sponsored by Ogilvie. Tickets are available NOW via TICKETMASTER, by calling 0844 499 1700 or direct at the Braehead Arena box office.
The Braehead Clan are delighted to announce the arrival of Canadian forward Mike Hammond, who has signed for the remainder of the 2016/17 season.
The 26-year-old comes to Glasgow after spells in the ECHL with Cincinnati Cyclones, where he played alongside Cody Carlsson and Brampton Beast.
And, as head coach Ryan Finnerty explained, his signing was created as a result of some readjustments to the team.
“Since we moved Jay Rosehill into the defensive lines, we had a hole to fill in our offensive line-up and we’ve been looking for the right guy,” the coach said.
“Mike has one year as a pro under his belt and we wanted someone with youth and energy. While he doesn’t have a ton of experience, he can play in either wing and is highly skilled.
“It’s exciting to work with players with enthusiasm and keen to move up the ladder. But he hasn’t played this year so he may take a bit of time to get going.
“Mike’s a relative unknown, but had great feedback from the coaches he worked under last year and we’re very positive about him and what he can bring.”
Hammond turned pro just last year, spending that year between Cincinnati and Brampton, but he played for four years at Lakehead University.
He’s already arrived in the UK ahead of this weekend’s three matches, starting with Friday’s home game with Sheffield Steelers.
But Finnerty says he won’t make a decision on whether Hammond will play any part of the game with the Elite League champions until he’s seen him on the ice.
He added: “Mike is due to arrive on Thursday and lands early so we’re hoping to get him on the ice, if we can.
“Once he arrives, we’ll try and get him a skate with the guys. We’ll certainly get him involved in the pre-game skate on Friday and make a decision from there.”
