Glasgow Braehead Clan head coach Ryan Finnerty couldn’t be happier with the performances of the two games at the weekend – but was left annoyed at the mistake that cost Sunday’s game.
Saturday’s 5-2 win over Manchester Storm was followed up by a 3-2 loss at Coventry Blaze, despite Clan dominating for much of the game.
However Finnerty couldn’t fault his players, who returned to action after a break last weekend.
“We’re starting to become a team that I like and I’m seeing positive signs of life here,” he said. “We played a good game and I thought, after the second period could have been up by two or three.
“Unfortunately we made a huge mistake, which gifted them two points, but we were the better team for most of the night.
“When you miss two empty net chances, typically things don’t end well. We made a really bad judgement call in the last 20 seconds that gave them those points.
“It all came down making a bad decision. If we play that game nine times out of ten, we walk away with a three or four goal lead.
“As a group, we know we can’t jump on four-on-four with 20 seconds left on the clock, but I’m not going to let one bad decision wreck the last two games.
“It’s been a good weekend for us performance wise and the guys have played well. They battled hard, competed well and I’m happy about that.
“We were down bodies and I was pleased with what I saw and, as I said, I’m not letting one 20 second spell ruin an otherwise good weekend.
“After the second period, we could have been up by at least two or three. (Brian) Stewart made some huge saves and that’s how they win, by relying on him.
“He bailed them out, but we just didn’t execute enough in that second period to build a lead. They scored some scrappy goals, but we threw it away in the end.”
