SIGNING: Stief added to Clan backline

The Glasgow Clan are delighted to announce the signing of American defenceman Matt Stief for the 2024/25 season.

The 28-year-old comes to Glasgow after two years with the Adirondack Thunder in the ECHL and is about to embark on his first overseas experience as a pro in hockey.

And Stief is pleased for the opportunity to come to the Elite League and is champing at the bit to continue his career in Scotland.

“I’m super excited to be joining the Clan this year,” he said. “I’ve heard a lot of great things about the club, the city and the fans.

“The chance to play in the UK was an attractive one so when the opportunity arose, I couldn’t wait to get everything sorted out.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun, so I can’t wait to come over and meet everyone, get started and play in what looks like a great arena.”

Stief made nearly 150 appearances for Thunder, scoring eight goals plus 55 assists for 63 points in his two years there.

Prior to that, he spent a season with Idaho Steelheads in his first pro season in 2021/22, racking up 18 assists in 54 games.

He also played over 130 games in the NCAA with Buffalo-based Canisius College, notching 60 points (five goals and 55 assists) over a four-year period up to 2020.

Steif had originally signed with Orlando Solar Bears for this season but will now join up with the Clan and head coach Corey Neilson says it’s another option for him on the blue line.

He said: “Matt is a nice young player who is very mobile and skilled.  We have a ton of depth in the forward positions and felt we needed to secure the same on our back end.

“We have a ton of size throughout the line-up and I felt his mobility and skill would really be an asset on our breakout, transition and rush play.

“I’m pleased to welcome Matt to the team and look forward to seeing what he can do for us this season.”

Stief will wear the #24 jersey this season.
