REPORT: Shmyr caps Clan debut with overtime winner

New boy Braylon Shmyr had an instant impact on Aspray Glasgow West Glasgow Clan as he scored an overtime winner to help seal a tight 2-1 victory over Nottingham Panthers.

It was a massive goal as Clan not only completed a clean sweep of league victories at the Motorpoint Arena, but also secured a first win beyond regulation time at the fifth attempt

The Panthers got the perfect start when an excellent pass from Matt Lane picked out JC Brassard loitering around the blue line who unleashed his shot which flew past Shane Starrett in the Clan net.

Clan peppered a few opportunities on the home goal, but found Kevin Carr equal to them and there was no way past the Panthers netminder.

A couple more chances came the way of Nottingham as a diagonal effort from Ollie Betteridge went wide, then Sean Richards could have shovelled one in from close range, but found no change from Starrett.

Massimo Carozza hit the post with a low shot early in the second as the home side looked to double their lead.

But up the other end, Mathieu Roy went close, taking the pass from Nolan LaPorte, but Carr again wasn’t having any of it.

Another big opportunity came for Panthers when a shot from the outside hit the bar, bounced up and landing on the crease where Starrett plunged to cover.

However Clan’s perseverance paid off when Mikko Vainonen tried the shot, where Roy was able to get the final touch and finish the move to equalise for the visitors, levelling at one after 40 minutes.

Clan grew into the game more and more and like the game with Guildford last week, it really could have gone either way.

Roy tried to catch Carr out with an early shoe, which was saved by Carr then LaPorte hit the post as both sides desperately tried to nick the points.

Starrett came up trumps with a huge save from Ollie Betteridge, overtime was soon needed to separate the two teams.

It took 48 seconds in the extra period for Clan to take the win when they surged forward, with Guillaume Gauthier finding Shmyr arriving late at the back post to bundle the puck in and confirm a massive result and end their overtime hoodoo.
