REPORT: Roy at the double as Clan claim key point in Fife

March 27, 2022

Mathieu Roy scored twice including a dramatic late equaliser for Aspray Glasgow West sponsored Glasgow Clan but Fife Flyers claimed a 3-2 victory in overtime.

It was a crucial point gained as Clan moved ahead of Dundee Stars into fifth place with eight games left in the regular season schedule.

A cagey first period drew a few chances, but nothing that would penetrate either goal to make a scoring difference in those first 20 minutes.

A good save by Shane Starrett from Brandon Magee in the opening session showed how tight things were going to be.

But Roy thought he had broken the deadlock in the final minutes, but was denied after review by the match officials.

Glasgow enjoyed some good looks in the second, with Mitch Jones hitting the bar at one point as the visitors looked to make the most of their chances.

They finally found a way as an effort from Jones hit the post, with Roy on hand to tuck in the equaliser to give Clan the lead.

Magee levelled for the Flyers a few minutes later as they put some pressure on and the period ended with both teams locked at a goal apiece.

Fife took the lead early in the third period as Matt Carter took advantage of a five-on-three powerplay opportunity to edge themselves in front.

Malcolm Cameron’s men needed to lift things as the third period went on and a good chance from Jones forced a terrific save from Flyers goalie Shane Owen, delivering something of a statement of intent.

Carter was denied with a big save from Starrett on a breakaway in the final five minutes, but when Clan’s goalie was pulled late on, the gamble paid off.

Roy was the man to get it with over a minute and a half to go and it proved crucial as, for the second time this season, a visit to Kirkcaldy went beyond 60 minutes.

Braylon Shmyr hit the bar then was denied by Owen, but Jonas Emmerdahl sealed victory for the Flyers as they snatched a vital winner to keep their fading play-off hopes alive.

For Clan, it could be a big point in the overall scheme of things with Belfast Giants next up on Tuesday night.
