A Brendan Brooks hat-trick played a part as Glasgow’s Braehead Clan strolled to a comfortable 7-2 win over bottom of the table Edinburgh Capitals.
With confidence high from Saturday’s 5-2 win over Sheffield Steelers, John Tripp’s side followed it up with two more points to open up a two-point lead over Coventry Blaze in the race for the play-offs.
However it was the Caps who went ahead after only 52 seconds when Mike Cazzola got the final touch on a blue line effort from Mike D’Orazio to put them in front.
Although Dillon Lawrence hit the post, Clan made their way through the gears and were able to equalise after 13 minutes.
Tyler Shattock brought the puck into the danger zone, which sparked a scramble in front of the crease that allowed Brendan Brooks to finish off.
Clan went ahead just over a minute later when Jacob Doty sent a low pass to Adam Brace at the blue line and he sent his shot flying past Edinburgh goalie Jordan McLaughlin.
Three Clan chances went begging as Shattock, Cameron Burt and Brooks all failed to connect, with Caps going close almost immediately as Igor Valeyev hit the post.
But Michal Gutwald’s shot with seconds to play of the first opened up a two-goal advantage after he was fed by Robbie Lepine behind the goal line.
The home side moved into a three-goal lead as Landon Oslanski struck the post with his initial shot before finishing his own rebound.
The Caps hit back almost immediately when Lawrence moved in from the right and sent a diagonal hit into the net.
Braehead kept up their dominance and restored the three-goal lead when Cameron Burt pinged his effort into the net on the powerplay.
Then Brooks got his second of the night when he drifted in from the left, rounded McLaughlin and tapped in to make it a comfortable 6-2 lead before adding a seventh to complete his hat-trick and seal the points.
