REPORT: Five star Clan topple Flyers
by Blair McNally
Glasgow Clan sponsored by Aspray Glasgow West secured yet another home win as they cruised to a comfortable 5-2 win over rivals Fife Flyers.
Goals from Jones, Gauthier (2), Shmyr and Yellow Horn ensured the Clan continued their fine streak, making it three wins in-a-row and five from their last six.
Starting the game on the front foot, it took the men in purple just four minutes to mark the scoreboard.
Driving at the Flyers defence, Rodney Southam showed no fear in the two-on-two situation, skipping past the visitor’s backline before back handing across the face of goal for Mitch Jones to slam home.
Minutes later, the Clan were fortunate to stay ahead. Carson Stadnyk’s tame effort creeped through the legs of Shane Starrett before coming off the post and out.
Clan doubled their lead eight minutes into the second and after seeing his first attempt bounce off the post, Guillaume Gauthier was first to react, reaching into the crease to dispatch on the second attempt.
With six minutes remaining, the win was all but secured as Gauthier claimed his second of the night with the Canadian was on hand between the circles to slam home the rebound from the spilled shot.
Before the end of the period, Shane Starrett was called into action to keep his clean sheet intact with a number of strong saves, leading to a standing ovation around the Arena.
Less than three minutes into the third it was four as Braylon Shmyr picked the puck up on the blue line as he proved too fast for Fife goalie Shane Owen, rounding the netminder before scooping into the empty net.
A minute later the hard work on the defensive end was undone as their shutout was broken, with Carson Stadnyk pulling one back for the visitors.
With five minutes left on the clock the Clan had their fifth of the night. as Yellow Horn executed a sweet finish on the powerplay.
Flyers claimed their second of the night not long after through Matthew Carter on the powerplay.
But it was to be the final action of the night as Malcolm Cameron’s men claimed the central belt of Scotland once again, running out 5-2 winners.
