Glasgow Clan, sponsored by Aspray Glasgow West, saw their Challenge Cup campaign end in disappointing fashion as Fife Flyers confirmed their own passage to the quarter finals with a 7-2 win in Kirkcaldy.

With two forwards having to take on defensive duties and nine offensive players to pick from, Clan’s line-up saw some injuries take their toll on the team.

The contest, as always, got highly physical very early on as both sides made their presence felt through big open ice hits sprinkled throughout the opening period.

The home side struck first as Brayden Sherbinen wristed the puck from the top of the circle, which was enough to see it sneak through the pads of Clan netminder Zach Driscoll.

Mathieu Roy attempted to level the game very quickly after as he received a pass from Mitch Jones at the crease but couldn’t control it in time as Flyers goalie Shane Owen sliced it clear.

Fife doubled their lead through a top shelf finish from Zack Phillips, which led to some ice time for Ty Taylor in net for the Clan in place of Driscoll.

But the Flyers wasted no time in pressuring Taylor as Shawn Cameron and Jaane Laakkinen bore down on the Clan net, with Cameron securing the finish.

Then Sherbinen doubled his tally for the night late in the first, showing impressive skill to shift the puck between his forehand and backhand before slotting it through Taylor’s five-hole.

Jonas Emmerdahl sent home a fifth for Fife with a slapshot from just in front of the blue line just into the second period.

Owen impressed in the Flyers net as he kept out big chances from Peacock and Jones in the second, but up the other end, Zack Phillips picked up his second goal through a neatly timed shot past Taylor.

Nolan LaPorte got one back for the Clan as he positioned himself perfectly to rebound a Kevin Massy shot and see the deficit drop to five.

Gabriel Chabot added himself to the score sheet, tipping Jordan Cownie’s shot to send it past Owen.

But former Clan forward Bari McKenzie capped off the scoring for the game as he guided the puck past Taylor with some quick hand movement to claim Fife’s seventh goal and a disappointing end to the weekend.
