Glasgow’s Braehead Clan made it two wins in a row as they followed up Tuesday’s win over Belfast Giants with two points at Murrayfield against Edinburgh Capitals.
As both teams looked to get the points that would help give some positivity heading to the New Year, it was the Clan who left Murrayfield to make it a four-point Christmas so far.
Goals were traded in the early stages as Brendan Brooks hit the mark first with a shorthanded goal as Pavel Vorobyev sat in the penalty box for accidental high sticks.
Edinburgh, keen to bounce back after a 10-1 thrashing at Fife Flyers on Boxing Day, got themselves back in it as Mike Cazzola equalised a minute later.
In terms of the scoring, there wasn’t a lot between them as they looked to get the advantage, but both goalies, Clan’s Ryan Nie and Edinburgh’s Jordan McLaughlin were unmoved.
That is until Bari McKenzie got the go-ahead goal for the visitors, set up by Michal Gutwald to add Braehead’s second against one of his old teams.
As time ticked down, the Caps looked to try and get themselves level, but couldn’t find a way past Nie as the Clan defence stayed resolute.
McLaughlin was pulled in the final stages as the home team went all out to get something, but a break up the other end saw Brooks finish an empty net goal.
Clan now return home to finish 2017 with high hopes of making it three wins in a row when Dundee Stars come to complete the calendar year.
