REPORT: Clan edged out by Stars in overtime
by Blair McNally
A first minute overtime goal saw the Aspray Glasgow West sponsored Glasgow Clan’s night edged out in a 2-1 defeat to the Dundee Stars.
Separated by just a point at the tail end of the season, tonight’s Scottish Derby was sure to be a stellar affair in front of a packed out Braehead Arena.
With the stakes so high between the sides in their hunt for a strong play-off spot there was to be a hectic start to proceedings with two fights in the space of a minute.
Two minutes in it was Dyson Stevenson with the gloves off, taking on Dundee counterpart Kyle Haas.
Both men had no sooner entered the penalty box when Cody Sol and Kalvis Ozols this time dropped the gloves with the Clan defenceman coming out on top.
With ten minutes on the board the home side looked to have taken the lead through a Mitch Jones piledriver into the top shelf.
Despite the celebrations, the goal was to be ruled out after a short video review with Mathieu Roy judged to have interfered with a high stick.
On the halfway mark the Stars were inches from taking the lead as two shots hit the post in the space of a minute or so.
Late on in the second the deadlock was broken as Brock Beukeboom picked up the puck at the top of the slot then rifled one into the top shelf to the delight of the home fans.
Both teams kept it tight in the third as Clan tried to close in on victory, but the visitors would get their goal four minutes from time.
Sebastian Bengstsson was the saviour for the Stars as he pounced on the rebound from Philippe Sanche’s shot, initially saved by Shane Starrett to slam home in front of the rowdy visiting support
Overtime was needed to settle the game and it took just 50 seconds for the Stars to get the all-important winner as Sanche was on the end of a fast break securing the second point and victory.
