ON THIS DAY: October 12th

October 12, 2021

The seasons across all the Clan timelines are well and truly underway and we’re plucking another three out of today’s archive to look back on.

As well as a visit by Belfast Giants, we’re also looking back on a couple of contests with Dundee Stars. One of which introduced us to not one, but two superstars.

2012: Braehead Clan 5 Dundee Stars 2 (Elite League & Challenge Cup)

This wasn’t like any other night in Braehead. This was the night NHL star Drew Miller made his debut after joining from Detroit Red Wings, as the NHL was ravaged by the lockout.

Not just him, but a star (no pun intended) was born as Clangus made his debut appearance for the first time on home ice. And both Miller and the coo had quite the night in appearing in front of the Purple Army.

It turned into a great win for the Clan, winning 5-2 over the Stars to claim both league and Challenge Cup points to mark a good start to this weekend.

Jade Galbraith’s opening goal was cancelled out by AJ MacLean, but two quick goals – one each from Brock McPherson and Sam Zajac, assisted by Miller for his first point – put the Clan in a commanding position.

Galbraith got his second and Clan’s fourth early in the second, with Matt Haywood notching a law fifth. The game was won despite Sami Ryhanen’s late consolation for Dundee.

2014: Dundee Stars 0 Braehead Clan 4 (Elite League)

Clan loaded up the bus and were on their way to Dundee to take on Jeff Hutchins’ side with league points at stake.

It was to be an excellent night’s work for Ryan Finnerty’s team as they not only swept four past the Stars away from home, netminder Kyle Jones kept his goal unblemished as well.

Two goals from Neil Trimm put the Clan in a good place in the first period, the first of which on the powerplay and things were off and running.

Matt Keith added a second in the middle period to more or less put the game behind the Stars, but not before Lee Esders scored one of his own to complete the job with ten minutes to go

2019: Glasgow Clan 3 Belfast Giants 2 (After Penalty Shots – Challenge Cup)

Zack Fitzgerald’s men were closing in on equalling an eight-game club record streak when they hosted Belfast Giants and despite a late scare from Adam Keefe’s side, they managed to do it.

It was a game that really could have gone either way and when Chad Rau scored on the powerplay with 15 minutes to go, the fans sensed it was going to be their night.

Although Ciaran Long hit back with ten minutes to go, Clan restored the lead through Rau again with five to go and the hope was they could hang on.

It wasn’t to be as Liam Reddox saved the Giants’ bacon with 17 seconds remaining, securing the point they needed to progress in the Challenge Cup.

The winning record was in sight and extended to seven thanks to Rasmus Bjerrum, who scored the decisive penalty shot as Clan took the extra point.
