NEWS: Stevenson buoyed by Cardiff cup performance

Aspray Glasgow West sponsored Glasgow Clan captain Dyson Stevenson says Wednesday’s Challenge Cup meeting with Cardiff Devils was an education for him.

Clan host the Devils again this Sunday (face off 5:00pm) on league business with Glasgow in third place in the table right behind Cardiff going into the weekend.

And Stevenson took a lot from the quarter final first tie on Wednesday, that saw them narrowly beaten 4-3 as he looked ahead to the second part of the trilogy against the Welsh side.

“I learned we can definitely play with the Cardiff Devils,” he said. “We’re right behind them in the league standings and while obviously we lost to them, they’re not a team we can let back in.

“We were up 3-1 and had to change our game a little, which maybe made it harder on ourselves.  They have a team full of skilled guys, guys that are leading scorers in their teams before.

“With a lead like the one we had, we can’t keep them hanging round.  Getting the three powerplay goals were good and I felt we controlled the pace, even at five-on-five and had a lot of shots on net.

“We need to get back to throwing pucks on the net and we did that on Wednesday playing short staffed.  On Sunday, we have to be smart with the penalties and stay out of the box.

“We’ve been disciplined in the last few league games and we’ve had success, but it’s important to win the special teams and get back on track with that.”
