Braehead Clan forward Callum Boyd was surprised to get the call from Ryan Finnerty – because he didn’t think the club would be interested in him.

Boyd has moved along the M8 from Edinburgh Capitals after two years at Murrayfield and is looking forward to his new challenge.

But the 22-year-old was under the impression his style of play wouldn’t be attractive to the Clan.

“The contact from the coach was a surprise as I didn’t expect to get the chance this soon and to be honest, I wasn’t sure if I would even interest them,” Boyd said.

“Every time I played against them, it seemed like nobody really liked me because I was constantly in everyone’s face.

“Playing against the Clan was annoying because they were the sort of team that got stuck in in every game and it went on and on.

It was a hard decision to leave Edinburgh, but I had to think about the next step of my career and what would be best for me.

“I want to progress on and get as good as I can possibly get and I feel moving to Braehead is the best option.”

It’s a meteoric rise for Boyd, who was playing in the SNL with Kilmarnock Storm prior to his move to the Capitals in 2014.

He admits moving into the professional ranks wasn’t something that had entered his thinking until the move to Edinburgh and said the step up with a big one.

And he admits to harbouring a dream of moving to Braehead, but didn’t expect to come about so soon in his career.

He added: “Two years ago, I was happy playing at Kilmarnock and I didn’t expect to be playing at this level, let alone signing for Braehead.

“I struggled with the step up at first and the training was much harder for a start. The drills were more intense and more technical than I was used to.

“It’s progressed quite rapidly in a short space of time, but I’m enjoying it. I always thought I’d end up playing in the SNL for the rest of my days.

“Then Edinburgh came along and I took the chance, thinking I had nothing to lose so I pushed myself to get better.

“My aim was to get to Braehead one day, but I didn’t expect it to be this soon. On the ice they’re getting closer and closer to winning trophies and being part of that would be amazing.”
