GLASGOW CLAN 2 BELFAST GIANTS 1

Glasgow Clan’s hopes of reaching the Challenge Cup Final will rest on the second leg in Belfast on Valentine’s Day after edging this physical contest 2-1.

With a place in Cardiff’s showpiece up for grabs, Clan showed they were keen to get there as they went toe to toe against the current holders and took the win on the night.

Craig Peacock went close with a chance on the Belfast doorstep as he got on to Brendan Connolly’s pass, but Giants goalie Tyler Beskorowany made the catch.

The home side were the team to go in front when Connolly’s got the nudge on the puck to find Matt Beca, who took a turn on the inside right and sent the puck into the net.

Gerard Hanson added a second five minutes into the middle when a shot from Zach Sullivan came loose near the crease.

It allowed the Swedish left winger to follow up as his shot sneaked in at the far post foe the home side to double the lead.

The Giants hit back on the powerplay soon after when Curtis Leonard set up Kyle Baun, who fired into the left of Joel Rumpel’s net.

Both sides couldn’t add to the scoring in the third with Dustin Johner going close, moving in from the right, but diverted behind by Clan’s goalie.

Peacock struck the post with an effort shortly after as they looked to add a third, but it wasn’t to be for the former Giants player.

Then Scott Tanski made a terrific save with the stick to prevent the puck from trickling over the goal line late on to preserve a hard-earned single goal lead.
