Glasgow Clan 5 Fife Flyers 1

Two goals from Mathieu Roy helped Glasgow Clan round off 2019 in the best possible way as they defeated their biggest rivals Fife Flyers 5-1.

Despite both teams lacking in any kind of decent form, it was one they both needed to get the points from and it was the purple contingent that were the happier of the two.

Fife could have had an early chance from Mike Cazzola, were it not for Matt Stanisz swooping and nicking the puck off the forward with a well timed poke check.

The home side got on the board first when Fife won a face off, but didn’t follow up on it as it landed for Stanisz, who fed it back in.

Rasmus Bjerrum got enough of a touch on it for Craig Peacock to slot it in on the powerplay and Clan were in front against their big rivals.

Flyers levelled near the end of the first when Danick Gauthier sent a shot in from the centre which looked to have taken a touch from James Livingston’s stick to divert it past Patrick Killeen.

Glasgow retook the lead after seven minutes of the second period when Matt Beca was jammed up against the back boards, but managed to give the puck to Mathieu Roy.

Clan’s #15 managed to squeeze the puck in at an acute angle, finding a small pocket of space to beat Fife goalie Adam Morrison.

After the restart, Jordan Heywood was taken down by Livingston, who was then confronted by Linden Springer, with both men having a scrap to the crowd’s excitement.

It seemed to galvanise the players and they were soon celebrating a third goal as Matt Haywood forced the puck in from a Mac Howlett assist.

Then, on a delayed penalty, Roy picked up his second of the game after captain Haywood had worked it well from behind the net and Clan fans were celebrating a 4-1 lead after two periods.

The icing was on the cake on a breakaway when Scott Jacklin burst down the left to set up Nolan LaPorte and it was in the back of the net for a fifth time to round up a good day’s work from Azk Fitzgerald and his team.
