GLASGOW CLAN MATCH REPORT: GLASGOW CLAN 4 BELFAST GIANTS 2

Glasgow Clan downed the Devils on Friday and followed up by slaying the Belfast Giants to complete a terrific two-win weekend.

With Clan back from their exertions in Cardiff the night before and the long journey home that followed, it was always interesting to see how they would manage this game against the league leaders.

By comparison, Giants were missing important players such as Patrick Dwyer and Paul Swindlehurst, to name a couple so their coach Adam Keefe had to play with his lines a little.

As for the game itself, there wasn’t much to show from either team in the first period although Hunter Bishop forced a low stop from Clan goalie Joel Rumpel.

The home side got the opening goal as former Giants player Craig Peacock opened the scoring, hitting the post with the initial effort then picking it up, taking it around the net and squeezing in at the back post to beat Belfast goalie Tyler Beskorowany.

The visitors almost tied up with a one-timer from David Rutherford that was diverted over then two powerplay chances from Jim Vandermeer at the blue line were stopped by Rumpel as Giants couldn’t find a way through in the opening session.

That changed in the second period when the Giants were able to get on the board as Bishop forced the puck in at the far side to bring Keefe’s side level.

Clan had a couple of great chances to restore the lead as Rasmus Bjerrum found himself in space in front of the crease on the powerplay, but Beskorowany get enough on it to take it wide.

Giants went 2-1 up shortly after when David Rutherford did well to win back near the slot, with Darcy Murphy applying the finish to give them the lead.

Then, an opportunity presented itself, somewhat cruelly on Beskorowany when a momentary lapse from him with a clearance, fell straight to Peacock, who punished with his second goal of the night.

The Clan retook the lead shortly when a Brendan Connolly chance was cleared, but only as far as Zack Fitzgerald, who rifled in from just inside the blue line, to the delight of the home fans.

Suddenly, there was a feeling a great result could be on and as Belfast went for it by replacing Beskorowany with an extra skater, Clan took advantage to kill the game off and claim two big league points.

Connolly went agonisingly close when his chance struck the post, but Travis Ehrhardt was on target to confirm a great weekend for Glasgow.
