A goal 13 seconds from time delivered a sucker punch to Glasgow Clan, who were sunk 2-1 at the Skydome by Coventry Blaze.
After the disappointment in Guildford last Sunday, Clan were keen to end their final weekend on the road with four points to take them into the homecoming game against Fife Flyers on Friday.
Danny Stewart and his team were never going to make it easy for the visitors and in a campaign that been mixed so far for both sides.
Both sides went in goalless after the first and Shawn Pauly saw an early effort stopped by Joel Rumpel in the early stages of the second as Coventry looked to gain an advantage.
Eventually the Clan were the first team on the board as Rasmus Bjerrum struck on the powerplay, assisted by Josh Gratton and Pete Russell’s team were in front.
The away team went close in the early stages of the third as the puck trickled wide and it got to the point where Miroslav Kopriva, in goal for Coventry and Rumpel had to come up big at times.
The Blaze pushed and finally got the equaliser with eight minutes to go as Tim Crowder scored to set up what proved to be a dramatic finale.
And so it came to pass as Ben Lake put away the winner, with virtually no time for Clan to hit back, claiming two big points for Coventry in a closely fought contest.
