Glasgow Clan were beaten in their opening Summer Series game when German side Fischtown Pinguins took a 3-0 win away in Pete Russell’s first game in charge.

It was a stern test for Clan, their first under the ‘Glasgow’ name since re-branding as they felt their way into new season, under the watchful eyes of the new coach.

The German side impressed at their quickness in turn over and in the early stages, it felt like it could really have been a tough night ahead.

The DEL outfit took the lead five minutes into the contest when Rylan Schwartz buried a low one under Gary Russell, playing in place of Joel Rumpel, in the Clan net.

Then Thomas Popiesch’s side added a second through Carson McMillan, who intercepted a Matt Stanisz pass and slotted home.

However, Glasgow found their way into the game, causing Jaroslav Hübl one or two issues in the Pinguins net.

Brendan Connolly and Scott Pitt saw their chances denied late on, but it gave the fans something to shout about going into the first break.

The visitors added a third in the middle session when Chris Rumble spotted a gap and poked in from close range to make it three without reply.

But Hübl was kept on his toes as Zach Sullivan rifled one narrowly wide and Scott Tanski attempted one at an angle that needed the Pinguins goalie to get behind and rebound away.

There were no more goals to show for the contest, but the visitors had opportunities to make what a good lead even more comfortable, but were denied by Russell.

Justin Feser and Cory Quick both tried shots on the Clan goalie, with no success, with Feser striking the post late on.
