The Premier Sports sponsored Glasgow Clan suffered a second consecutive five-goal loss to the Sheffield Steelers in the Motorpoint Elite League in a sobering night on the road.
There were few chances at either end in the opening period, with Rylan Schwartz generating the only real look at net for the Clan with a quick shot on the spin which was blockered wide by Matthew Greenfield while Liam Souliere started off strong in net for the visitors.
In the second period, Cole Kodsi received the puck at the apex of the Sheffield crease and dragged it wide to try and create a shooting lane, but he couldn’t lift his shot high enough to force it into the net.
Brady Risk had two attempts from the same spot in quick succession as he parked in front of Greenfield and fired high wrist shots at goal, but he couldn’t capitalise on some strong offensive pressure for Glasgow.
Olivier Archambault broke out on a two-on-one with Tim Gettinger later in the period and slid a great set-up pass to the big #25 who slammed a first-time shot past Souliere to open the scoring.
The floodgates seemingly opened after Gettinger’s opener, with Ryan Tait flicking a second into the net just 62 seconds later and Brandon Whistle adding a third just under two minutes after that.
Josh Tarzwell was unfortunate not to score on a breakaway as he released a low shot on target which was kicked clear by Greenfield just before Kodsi was denied on a great chance in the same fashion.
Gettinger got his second goal just before the end of the second stanze in virtually identical circumstances to his first, this time Mitchell Balmas was the provider after a lung-busting charge up right wing from last year’s league MVP.
The Steelers added to their tally in the third period as Whistle bagged his second of the game on the powerplay after some nice, quick passing to dish the puck around the zone from the Sheffield special teams.
Matt Spencer got tangled with Leevi Teissala near the end of the game and swept the Steelers’ forward to the ice, resulting in a minor penalty for roughing and a 10 minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, ending his night early.
The buzzer sounded at the Utilita arena after a rough night for the Clan, with a League tie against the Guildford Flames on home ice up next tomorrow night.
