GAME RECAP
It was nervy, but Glasgow Clan got the job done to rack up their fifth straight victory as they edged past Sheffield Steelers in a 2-1 game.
A first road game in three weeks was also going to be a test as Clan pitted themselves against last season’s Grand Slam winners.
There were chances on both sides in the early stages as one of them sought to gain an early advantage on the scoreboard.
But it was the Clan who edged themselves in front as Tyson McLellan netted with his 11th goal of the season, delivering a one time effort into the net from the crease.
Netminder Landon Bow had to be taken off after 10 minutes when he sustained an injury, with back-up Lucas Brine introduced to the action.
And he managed to keep the Steelers at bay as Glasgow returned to their locker room after the first period a goal to the good.
Clan killed a Liam Finlay slashing penalty early in the second and went on to double their lead just before the half hour mark.
A neat backhand finish from Simon Després found its way past Sheffield goalie Matt Greenfield as the visitors strengthened their lead.
But Steelers hit back as Daniel Leavens pulled one back on 33 minutes to halve the deficit and bring them into the game.
Clan’s penalty killing unit proved effective as they saw off Chris Martenet’s tripping call late in the second going into the third.
Steelers stepped things up in an attempt to at least draw level to get something from the game but found a Glasgow side as stubborn as they were resilient.
A couple of late penalties demanded a unified front as the two Chris’ – Martenet and McKay – each took a stint in the box, but there was no way through for Sheffield.
Steelers coach Aaron Fox pulled Greenfield in a last throw of the dice, but the night belonged to the Clan with a big road win in a building where they last won over a year ago.
