GAME RECAP

A late Cole Ully goal gave Glasgow Clan a late lifeline, but Sheffield Steelers held on to win 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller at the Utilita Arena.

Clan headed for Yorkshire keen to get back on track after Saturday’s 4-3 defeat at Manchester Storm and looking for another win at the Utilita Arena to end a four-game away stint.

They started the game well and the opening goal came from an unlikely source in Keaton Jameson, who fired from the inside left, through the legs of Rylan Schwartz on the doorstep and past Matt Greenfield.

Steelers levelled things around the 12-minute mark as Marc-Olivier Vallerand sent a shot in from the left side circle and over Landon Bow’s shoulder.

A slash on Mikko Juusola as Sheffield went on a breakaway resulted on a penalty shot, which the Finnish forward duly finished to put the home side in front.

Vallerand struck again for the Steelers in the second period with a well taken effort from the slot to increase their lead to two.

However Clan weren’t out of it yet as Simon Despres sent one in shorthanded, with Robert Lachowicz getting a touch to it beyond Greenfield and reduce the arrears to one after two periods.

The game was on a knife edge going into the third session and it was a case of who would get the first goal of the period to give an indicator of where the points would end up.

It was the Steelers who restored the two-goal lead as Daniel Ciampini found the net with eight minutes, a goal which needed another look by the officials to confirm its validity.

Glasgow were ready to be counted out yet though as a clever tic-tac-toe saw Liam Finlay setting up Cole Ully with a tap-in to give them a glimmer of hope.

A Samuel Tremblay penalty for charging in the last couple of minutes allowed Clan to go from broke, recalling Bow to the bench in favour of a six-on-four situation.

But the Steelers held on as Clan ended the weekend on a disappointing note, ending a run of four straight games on the road.

• Clan’s Keaton Jameson scored his first league goal for the club, 155 days since his last goal, which game in a Challenge Cup tie against Dundee Stars back on 5th October 2024.
