GAME RECAP
Glasgow Clan’s hopes of making the last four of the Challenge Cup are at an end after Nottingham Panthers took a 5-1 victory at the Motorpoint Arena.
With a place in the semi-final up for grabs, Clan were keen to book their passage but came up against a Panthers side who made the most of the home advantage to claim a big win.
It was a fast start to the game as Nottingham looked to set the tone as Logan Neilson’s chance was cleared off the line while Sam Herr and Tim Doherty went close themselves.
Didrik Henbrant thought he had put the home side ahead, but his goal was ruled out due to a kicking motion with the skate, from where the puck ricocheted from.
The opening goal came shortly after through Herr as Clan defended a Steven Seigo penalty, with Panthers’ captain netting from close range.
Within a minute, Danny Stewart’s men were two ahead as Cooper Zech fired one in from the left side, leaving Glasgow having to play catch up.
Mitchell Heard pulled one back in the early stages of the second period with a well-hit strike from between the dots that flew into the net.
Panthers goalie Jason Grande had to make two good saves to deny Rylan Schwartz and Liam Finlay, but the home side’s two-goal lead was restored soon after.
Mitch Fossier delivered a shot into the top right-hand corner of Landon Bow’s net as Nottingham stung Clan on the breakaway, which is how the score stayed by the end of the middle session.
Glasgow started the third in encouraging fashion, killing a five-on-three penalty without taking any further hits to the scoreboard.
However the Panthers picked up a fourth minutes later as Doherty set up Matt Alfaro, who delivered a backhand finish past Bow.
Then Hugo Roy added a fifth to make the scoreline a little more one-sided, with Clan’s Challenge Cup progression hopes ended with it on a disappointing night.
