GAME RECAP

It wasn’t to be for Glasgow Clan in their only game of the weekend as Sheffield Steelers claimed both points thanks to three goals in the first period in their 3-1 win.

The Steelers took the lead inside the opening five minutes as Mark Simpson made his way into the Clan zone, looking to send it forward on goal.

It came off Reece Kelly’s stick, right in Simpson’s path and he despatched his shot past Landon Bow in the home goal.

Minutes later, Keaton Jameson played a delightful backhand pass into the lane of Alex Forbes, but was denied by an excellent blocked save from Sheffield netminder Matt Greenfield.

The visitors soon made it two as Maxim Golod took the puck from behind the net and swung in a wraparound through Bow’s legs to double their lead.

Clan made a change in net when Lucas Brine was brought in to replace Bow and made a couple of decent early saves to warm up the gloves.

Up the other end, Cole Ully blasted one on net from the inside left, but Sheffield were three ahead before the end of the first as Marc Olivier Vallerand found Brandon Whistle, who fired his shot into the top corner of the net.

Bow returned to the Glasgow net for the second period as they looked sharper and more dangerous in their offensive plays.

In fact, Rylan Schwartz thought he had netted from close range after Chris McKay appeared to bring the puck down with his hand, but the goal was ruled off for an infringement.

Matt Berry struck the post with a chance before Steven Seigo also went close, with Greenfield equal to it.

With four minutes to go in the second, Clan finally ended Steelers’ run of over three hours without conceding a goal as Mitchell Heard hit one off the glass behind the goal.

It bounced out for Berry, who played a deft pass for Schwartz to tuck in at the back post and Corey Neilson’s side were finally on the board.

Glasgow continued to outshoot their opponents in the third period, but had to ride their luck up the other end as Sheffield looked for what would have been a killer fourth.

Mikko Juusola sent one in for Steelers that came off Bow’s shoulder and hit the post before being cleared away.

Greenfield again showed his qualities with some top saves to keep Glasgow as bay, but it was Bow who produced the stop of the night.

Mitchell Balmas gained possession of the puck to nick it from Simon Després and bore down on goal.

He spotted Patrick Watling arriving in support, but when it seemed like it would be the clincher, Clan’s goalie threw himself at the puck to prevent it from getting past him.

Despite Bow being returned to the bench for the extra skater in the final couple of minutes, Steelers held on to take the win.
