GAME RECAP

The first of a home double header weekend ended on a low note as Glasgow Clan saw a two-goal lead wiped out as Sheffield Steelers took a 5-2 win at Braehead Arena.

Clan started on the front foot, but had to contend with Steelers netminder Matt Greenfield, who was feeling a little stubborn.

A Rylan Schwartz rebound effort was stopped by the Sheffield goalie, then Chris McKay hit the side net as the home team looked to impose themselves on the game.

They got the opener as Liam Finlay drove down the right hand side and lifted his shot over Greenfield’s shoulder and into the roof of the net to give Glasgow the lead.

Landon Bow, up the other end, was called upon to deny Mikko Juusola as Sheffield look to get back on level terms on the powerplay.

Clan added a second early in the middle period as Finlay pounced a rebound from Seigo’s shot, moved on by Greenfield, but only into the path of the home forward, who got his second of the game.

Bow was on hand to deny Robert Dowd from close range, while Patrick Watling had room to get a shot away shortly after, only for his stick to shatter at the most inopportune time.

Greenfield made a huge save, which set the tone for the final couple of minutes of the second period when he stopped a real chance from Deven Sideroff out in front.

Sheffield seem galvanised by this and they were on the board when Dominic Cormier’s shot seemed to go through Bow.

Then, almost immediately, Steelers were on level terms as Sacha Guimond rifled his effort into the net and it was all square going into the third.

Steelers got themselves in front when Bow made a good, instinctive save to deny Marc-Olivier Vallerand, but Brandon Whistle was quickest to react as he put it away.

They extended their lead halfway through the final period when Mark Simpson got on the end of their own rebound to tuck in Sheffield’s fourth as the game threatened to get away from the Clan.

Mitchell Heard’s night ended with five to go when he was charged with a five-plus-game for spearing on Vallerand.

Sheffield made the most of the major penalty as Watling sent a wrist shot flying into the net to make it 5-2 and put the seal on a road win for the visitors.
