The Premier Sports sponsored Glasgow Clan were forced to go the distance with a sturdy Guildford Flames side but eventually fell to an overtime snipe on home ice.
Chris McKay had the first chance of the game for Glasgow as he was on the end of some slick tape-to-tape passing and broke in on net but Justin Fazio was wise to his effort.
Rob Lachowicz then sprung a breakaway shorthanded and forced a stretch save from Fazio which allowed space for Darien Kielb to squeeze a rebound shot on target but the goaltender’s stick denied the puck on the line.
Ethan Strang struck a strong shot from the right wing which Liam Souliere deflected away with his midriff before Cole Ully pounced on the loose puck and ripped a rebound short side, producing a great stop and hold by Souliere.
Cade Neilson was denied by the pipework when his sharp angle shot from the edge of the crease crashed off the crossbar, as the first period drew to a close with the goaltenders being the only winners.
Mick Messner broke the deadlock in the middle period as he planted a powerful blast past Fazio from the blue line with over half the game gone.
Tyler Preziuso levelled the scoring for the visitors as he swung a piledriver from the right side which fizzed beyond Souliere just four minutes after going behind.
Joe Hazeldine was close to reopening the Clan advantage when he recieved a drop pass from Felix Pare on a two-on-one breakout but hit the post with his final shot before lingering on the puck in a backdoor shooting lane and losing possession to Fazio.
Daniel Tedesco forced a neutral zone turnover from Guildford which created a two-on-none with Brady Risk parked at the backdoor only for his shot to be denied by a low pad from Fazio.
Risk redeemed himself though with a shot through traffic from the left circle which redirected off Cade Neilson to bounce into the net and give Glasgow back the lead.
Former Clan forward, Cole Ully levelled the tie just 30 seconds later though as he snapped a well-placed shot into the top corner of Souliere’s net.
Souliere made an unbelievable stop on Mathieu Gosselin as he charged the net with a quick rush after a turnover in the Dzone by Glasgow and sent a quick effort on target before rebounding his own shot only to be denied once again.
The game was forced to overtime through defensive heroics on both sides of the puck but Guildford found a gap through Charlie Curti who sniped home the game winner after 57 seconds of the extra period.
The point claimed by going beyond regulation was enough to secure Glasgow’s qualification for this year’s EIHL playoffs though as the Dundee Stars lost in Manchester.
