GAME RECAP
Cole Ully’s overtime winner secured a big home win as Glasgow Clan needed the extra minutes to defeat Guildford Flames 5-4 at Braehead Arena.
It was the perfect tonic to Friday’s disappointment in losing to Cardiff Devils by the same score on Friday night, but they had to work for it.
Clan were under the cosh in the opening minutes as the Flames looked to take advantage, with their captain Brett Ferguson sending a powerful shot on the rebound, which was saved by Landon Bow in Clan’s net.
A simple goal unlocked the Clan as a wayward pass found Brett Walchyka, who had room on the inside right, sending a quick pass to Daniel Tedesco to caress it home.
Flames netminder Eamon McAdam produced a terrific leg save when it looked like Ully and Tyson McLellan combined, with the latter’s shot blocked.
Glasgow almost levelled at the end of the opening period when Keaton Jameson’s shot crashed off the post in the final seconds as Clan had their own powerplay advantage.
Clan started the better of the two teams after the break, but were duly stung when a Liam Finlay chance was saved by McAdam, but Flames broke straight away with Ethan Strang tearing off through the centre and finishing past Bow.
The tenacity of the home team continued to show and they got their reward when a Matt Berry pass from the right was sent home by Felix Paré, sweeping in a one-timer.
Glasgow were soon level as a good move, started by Ully, played in Deprés as he entered the Guildford zone before spotting Finlay on the far side.
Clan’s #10 quickly moved it to Ully, who found a great spot in the centre to bundle it past McAdam for the equaliser.
Play was delayed as the referees went to video review, but it was for a butt-ending call on Walychka that saw Flames lose him on a five plus major penalty.
Deven Sideroff took advantage of the extended powerplay when he took on McLellan’s pass from behind the net and stabbed it into the Guildford goal to take the lead.
The visitors equalised five minutes into the third as Strang sent Ferguson’s pass into the Clan net and it was all square at three apiece.
Rylan Schwartz saw his night ended early for a major boarding call, resulting in a five-plus-game penalty.
Sideroff thought he had scored the winner inside the final minute with a skilled finish to send Braehead Arena into raptures.
But with three seconds left on the clock, Charlie Dodero tapped in from Charlie Curti to set up overtime, where Ully struck with his second of the game to clinch the extra point.
