The Premier Sports sponsored Glasgow Clan lost a second-straight game to the Coventry Blaze as the in-form visitors fired five on the boards in a big momentum game at Braehead.
Lucas Brine got the start in net for the second game in a row, and for the fourth time in five games, with new signing, Liam Souliere backing him up after his lone start in a 5-1 road loss to Manchester.
Colton Saucerman made his return to the Blaze lines for the first time since December 14th while Connor Russell sat this one out as both sides lined up with 18 skaters and four full lines of forwards.
The visitors got off to a dream start with Elijah Barriga winning possession after the faceoff at centre ice before playing the puck to William Boysen who slammed home a slap shot from the right side to give Coventry the lead after 8 seconds of play.
Adam Robbins fired a shot from an awkward angle which required a quick reflex save down low from Brine before Daniel Tedesco released a first time shot high on net which Mat Robson got a shoulder to.
The opening period ended with just Boysen’s early goal to separate the sides despite Brayden Burke crashing a shot off the post from the faceoff dot.
The Clan broke their puck luck in the second period though with Felix Pare playing a stretch pass to Alex Forbes in the slot who bobbled the puck into the air before swinging his stick and batting it high into the top shelf baseball style.
Brett Neumann then received a huge hit from Sam Ruffin at centre ice but popped back to his feet quickly and got on the end of a coast-to-coast pass to jump on a breakaway where he launched the puck into the top corner off the pipework in a great display of resilience.
The Clan nearly doubled their lead immediately after when captain, Deven Sideroff battled to win possession in the offensive zone and dished it to Rylan Schwartz at the backdoor who sent his in-close effort just wide.
The Blaze then turned up the heat with three goals in quick succession starting with Jere Vertanen firing a slap shot from the blue line past Brine on the powerplay while Tedesco sat for two minutes.
Tedesco was penalised again for holding exactly 60 seconds later which allowed Coventry’s special teams to show their efficiency with Colton Saucerman throwing a shot on net which bounced off the well-positioned Grant Mismash and redirected past Brine.
Grayson Constable was then played in on a breakaway by Saucerman and he didn’t waste the chance with a snipe to put the visitors ahead 4-2 after being down 2-1 just two minutes before.
The third period was a battle for Glasgow trying to jockey their way back into contention for points, mainly by way of offence generated by Brayden Burke, Nuemann, and Langan.
Mat Robson continued to have a spectacular performance for Coventry though and put up a 94.87 save percentage with 37 saves in the game.
Blaze captain, Kim Tallberg’s blue line ripper into the top shelf was the final nail in the coffin for the Clan as the visitors headed back to West Midlands with two points in a 5-2 victory.
