The Premier Sports sponsored Glasgow Clan put on a show in front of a great, noisy crowd at the Braehead Arena as they sent the Cardiff Devils back to Wales empty handed after a bloodied and testing 60 minutes.
Riley Brandt brought Cardiff’s offence into the game early as he dragged the puck around Sami Aittokallio’s net and tried to tuck it into the far corner but the Finnish netminder stretched his line to deny him at the backdoor.
Jason Fram corked a shot from the blue line which Tristin Langan got in front of to tip it low on net but Ben Bowns managed to track it and keep his net empty.
Joey Martin opened the scoring for the visitors as he sniped a wrist shot from deep into the roof of the net on the powerplay after just four minutes.
Brady Risk responded for the Clan as Miihkali Teppo squeezed a shot through the pads of Bowns which spilled into the blue paint for Risk to cram over the line
Josh MacDonald burst in on net later in the opening frame after a slip pass by Cole Sanford and the #92’s high speed charge at net forced an impressive skate blade save from Aittokallio at the back pipe.
Chris McKay gave Glasgow the lead before the first break after Langan and Rylan Schwartz traded some lovely slick passes in the offensive zone before setting up the defenceman for a first time blast which he coolly dispatched past Bowns.
In the second period, Felix Pare doubled Glasgow’s advantage with a first time bomb after a slick drop pass by Rob Lachowicz as the Clan scored shorthanded.
Joey Martin didn’t let his team languish behind by two for long though as he grabbed his second of the night via a tidy top shelf finish just 90 seconds after Pare’s goal.
Langan sparked the third period into life with a pinpoint finish just 23 seconds into the period, once again though, the two-goal lead didn’t last long with Steven MacLean rifling a shot through traffic to make it 4-3 just 44 seconds later.
The game was halted within seconds of the restart when Steven Seigo and Ryan Barrow collided in the Clan zone at the boards and shattered a plexi glass panel with the impact.
A quick fix from the Clan off-ice staff got the game swiftly back underway and the Clan took control of the game with not long left as Mick Messner picked his spot expertly and sliced number five past Bowns.
Glasgow were then forced to see the game out from the back with the Devils getting two powerplays and pulling their netminder for a sixth skater in the final 10 minutes.
Aittokallio and the Clan D-core were up to the task though with a litany of blocked shots and showstopping saves as the final buzzer sounded over a 5-3 win at Braehead for Glasgow.
Tensions flared post-match with Bowns travelling to the Clan bench to have words with Aittokallio which quickly turned into a physical bout and the two having to be separated.
While it wasn’t a full scale fight, the Braehead crowd had picked a winner from the bout as Aittokallio was serenaded by the fans while picking up the Player of the Game award.
