GAME RECAP

Captain Deven Sideroff led the way for Glasgow Clan as they grabbed a seventh win in eight games, defeat Belfast Giants 5-1 at home in a Boxing Day bash.

Clan defenceman, Simon Despres opened the scoring early when he dumped the puck in from the blue line and it took a fortunate deflection off Ben Lake’s Belfast stick before gliding into the net.

Rylan Schwartz almost doubled the hosts’ lead when he broke in all alone on Tom McCollum’s net on the penalty kill but he couldn’t find a way past the Belfast netminder.

The game then took a feisty turn when Giants’ captain, Mark Cooper had an altercation with Steven Seigo which Mitchell Heard took exception to as he dropped the gloves with Cooper.

After killing off Heard’s two-minute instigator penalty, the Clan were once again involved in a bout as Chris McKay lay a huge hit on Mack Stewart and then threw punches with Ciaran Long.

McKay was subsequently punished after a lengthy review by the officials and handed a game ejection for checking to the head.

Clan goalie Lucas Brine got the second period off to a flying start as he put stop to numerous offensive chances for Belfast including an impressive backdoor stop on JJ Piccinich.

At the other end, Schwartz doubled Glasgow’s lead as he got on the end of a pinpoint cross-ice pass from Cole Ully which was slipped through to the #71 via a slick deke from Despres before Schwartz snapped a shot past McCollum on the four-on-four play.

Long and Cooper were also thwarted by Brine later in the period with the Clan netminder pulling off some show-stopping saves to hold onto his shutout ambitions.

Schwartz and Felix Pare later combined in a crisp one touch passing move which led them direct to the net front, but Pare’s backdoor effort was kept out on the line by McCollum.

Sideroff pushed the Clan into a three-goal lead when he poked the puck through McCollum’s five-hole on a quick breaking move alongside Schwartz.

Josh Roach responded quickly for the visitors as he scored an opener for Belfast to quell Brine’s shutout hopes.

Glasgow’s goalie  continued to flourish in the Clan net though as he pulled off an astonishing save on a backdoor shot for Elijah Barriga.

Then Heard reinstated Glasgow’s three-goal advantage when he slipped through the Belfast zone and backhanded the puck into the roof of the net.

Sideroff closed out the victory for the Clan as he launched a long-range shot which rolled into the empty net on the powerplay for the captain’s second goal of the game and the Clan’s fifth.
