GAME RECAP

It was an agonising night for Glasgow Clan as they ended the weekend with a penalty shots loss to Fife Flyers – the second defeat by shootout for the second consecutive night.

Both netminders were the stars of the show to start the game as Lucas Brine made some impressive quick reflex saves for the Clan while Shane Owen rescued the hosts from a number of odd-man rushes.

Despite the Clan staving off an early penalty on Cole Ully with some hearty defending, the Flyers managed to find a breakthrough as Charles-Antoine Paiement finished off a swift move through the Clan zone with the opening goal of the game.

Fife went into the intermission with a lead and would start the second period with a powerplay after Cade Neilson took a five-minute penalty for elbowing from a late hit on Daniel Krenzelok.

In the second period, Felix Pare put the Clan back on level terms as he struck one-time shot through the pads of Owen after an impressive full-length burst from Keaton Jameson shorthanded.

Tyson McLellan then produced a go-ahead goal for the visitors as he tipped Steven Seigo’s long-range shot high into the Fife net on the powerplay.

The Clan saw out the rest of the second period with a 2-1 lead after overturning the Flyers’ lead with two special team goals and the physicality never lessened with Kieran Craig sitting for two minutes for an aggressive hit from behind on Ully.

In the third, the physicality reached its peak as Olivier LeBlanc dropped the gloves with Neilson which saw them both ejected from the game.

Neilson was sent to the locker room by the officials as he had now been awarded two major penalties in the game, while Fife’s captain missed out on the rest of the night with a major penalty for instigating.

Late in regulation, Paiement rushed up ice and dumped the puck to Michael Cichy who sent a first-time shot past Brine to tie the game up with little time left and forced the game into overtime.

Lucas Chiodo and Jameson both came close to scoring a game-winner in the extra period, but were each beaten by the opposition post as the game spilled past open play and had to be decided by a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, McLellan was the solo scorer for the Clan as Cichy and Craig both dispatched of their shots and sealed the bonus point for Fife.
