GAME RECAP

Belfast Giants 3 Glasgow Clan 0

There was disappointment on the road in Belfast as Glasgow Clan couldn’t find a way past the Giants in a 3-0 Challenge Cup at the SSE Arena.

While the scoreline looked one-sided, Belfast didn’t score two of their goals until the final couple of minutes as Clan stayed in the game right to the end.

Giants outshot the Clan 12 to seven in the first period, but it was honours even by the time the buzzer sounded to end the first period.

It was much the same in the second period, with chances at both ends, but it was the home team who got the breakthrough with 40 seconds to go in the second.

Grant Mismash’s shot was initially saved by Lucas Brine in the Clan goal, but the puck popped out where Pierre-Olivier Morin bundled in on the powerplay.

Glasgow needed a big 20 minutes and certainly gave as good as they got, competing as much as possible and not giving the Giants an easy night.

However, they got the second with 76 seconds left on the clock, with Brine brought to the bench in favour of an extra skater.

But JJ Piccinich struck on the empty net to give Belfast a little breathing room late on, to the delight of the home fans.

Then Morin wrapped things up with a minute to go as he finished off from a Mark Cooper assist to confirm the points for Adam Keefe’s men.

Mitchell Heard was kicked out of the game shortly after for a slashing call, but it had no impact on the outcome.
