GAME RECAP

Two late third period goals saw Glasgow Clan fight back from 3-1 down, but lose out on penalty shots to Belfast Giants in the second meeting between the teams of the weekend.

After Clan’s 3-1 success at home on Saturday, both sides resumed hostilities at the SSE Arena in the Northern Irish capital.

Deven Sideroff, who scored twice at Braehead Arena, picked himself up a hat-trick that saw Corey Neilson’s side take three points from a possible four in their Challenge Cup campaign.

It was Sideroff who scored the first of the night when his shot flew into the top shelf to beat Giants netminder Jackson Whistle inside the opening four minutes.

But Belfast were back on level terms a couple of minutes as Mike Lee fired in from inside the blue line on the powerplay and things were all square relatively quickly.

The home side thought they had notched a second soon after, but it was ruled out due to an infringement on Landon Bow, Glasgow’s goalie.

Another powerplay led to another goal for the Giants as Grant Mismash helped his team exploit the man advantage to put them in front.

Then they added a third, with Mismash on target again a few minutes later and it looked as though the game was starting to slip away from Glasgow.

If it was, no-one told the players on the ice as they valiantly defended a five-on-three penalty to keep the gap at two and despite the loss of Mitchell Heard with a ten-minute major for unsportsmanlike conduct, it galvanised the team in the final minutes.

Captain Sideroff led by example with a shorthanded goal with 43 seconds left on the clock to reduce the deficit by half.

Then, in dramatic fashion, Sideroff struck again with his fifth goal of an impressive weekend for him personally, tying the game up 14 seconds later to complete his hat-trick with another shorthanded finish.

Overtime came and went with nothing to separate the teams in the extra period, but Belfast got the edge in penalty shots, scoring each of their first three attempts to claim the extra point in the end.
