REPORT: Clan four-midable in Fife win

It was a comfortable evening for Glasgow Clan, sponsored by Aspray Glasgow West, as they ran out worthy 4-1 winners in the Clanadonia clash against rivals Fife Flyers for the first time since January 2020.

Tonight’s fixture saw three changes to Malcolm Cameron’s men after their impressive 5-1 victory away to the Manchester Storm on Sunday.

Mitch Jones remained unavailable due to Covid protocols as Liam Stenton replaced Harry Ferguson on the bench.

Full of confidence after their demolition of the Storm, Clan started the better of the sides, testing visiting netminder Shane Owen on a number of occasions in the opening exchanges.

This paid dividends as the home side took the lead through Colin Campbell in the eighth minute as his effort caught in the netminder’s ear before trickling over the line to open the scoring.

Netminder Shane Starrett continued his red-hot form with the pick of the saves coming as Mike McNicholas found himself free in front of goal. HIs neat footwork wasn’t enough as the Clan number 40 was equal to it.

In complete control, Clan doubled their lead with two minutes left in the first on the powerplay as Tim Shoup picked up the loose puck and smashed home.

The second period failed to live up to the heights of the first as the intensity of the game slowed, but this didn’t stop the men in purple grabbing a third.

Mathieu Roy capitalised to tuck the puck into the empty net after Dyson Stevenson left Owen flat footed and committed, leaving Clan’s on-form the simplest of tasks.

A nervy start to the third gave Flyers fans some hope as they pulled one back two minutes in through McNicholas, who picked up the puck in the slot and dispatched high past Starrett.

This was only a consolation as the win was confirmed by Matt Haywood just three minutes later, renewing the home sides four goal lead.

Breaking on the left Haywood cut in, leaving Fife D-man Imant Lescovs floundering, before executing through the five-hole to seal the win.
