REPORT: Clan leave Dundee Star-struck
by Blair McNally
Glasgow Clan sponsored by Aspray Glasgow West recorded consecutive wins at home as they dismantled play-off rivals Dundee Stars 5-2.
Goals from Mikko Vainonen, Mitch Jones, Braylon Shmyr, Mathieu Roy and Guillaume Gauthier ensured the Clan came away with maximum points in a tasty affair as they moved up to fifth in the Premier Sports Elite League standings.
Keen to make an impact from the get-go, the visitors, only a point below in the EIHL standings, fell narrowly close to opening the scoring on a number of occasions, crashing two efforts against the post as they attacked with pace.
Despite the pressure, the first goal of the night came the way of the Clan with six minutes remaining in the first as Mikko Vainonen lifted the puck high to claim his second goal in as many games.
Clan doubled their lead eight minutes into the second on the powerplay as Mitch Jones collected from Colton Yellow Horn before smashing the puck out of the reach of Stars goalie Adam Morrison.
Six minutes later, Braylon Shmyr made it 3-0 with the goal of the night with a superb solo effort as he beat several Stars defencemen before roofing his effort in off the backhand to the delight of the home fans.
After going close with several great chances, Stars eventually got their goal five minutes into the third as Philippe Sanche got the better of Shane Starrett.
Minutes later, it was déjà vu as the Clan’s three goal lead was reduced to just one as Connor Sills scored for the Stars to set up a tense ending.
However, this would be short lived with the help of none other than Mathieu Roy, dispatching past Morrison for a powerplay goal.
A successful night at the Braehead Arena was confirmed with a minute remaining as the Clan took full advantage of the Stars empty net, with Guillaume Gauthier slotting into the yawning cage.
