Braehead Clan couldn’t make it two win in two as they were beaten 5-3 by the current Elite League champions, Sheffield Steelers in Yorkshire.

It took the Steelers just under five minutes to open the scoring as Ben O’Connor got the interception and fired one on target, with Robert Dowd finishing the resultant rebound.

Braehead were back on level terms minutes later as Corey Cowick – scoring his second of the weekend – did enough to put his effort beyond Steelers goalie Ervins Mustukovs from close range.

But the home side restored the lead through Matthieu Roy, sending a well struck shot high into Michal Zajkowski’s net after combining with Tyler Mosienko.

O’Connor increased Steelers’ lead in the second period when he unleashed a deadly shot than flew past Zajkowski.

Then they made it 4-1 when Andreas Valdix buried Dowd’s shot just over the halfway point and Paul Thompson’s side had opened up a healthy lead.

Craig Peacock pulled one back for the Clan early in the third when he poked the black disc under Mustukovs to reduce the arrears.

Braehead got to within one of the Elite League champions as Matt Beca was found lurking at the back post to bury a vital finish with 15 minutes to go of the third period.

Steelers made it 5-3 with five to go as O’Connor picked up his second of the game to all but secure the win for the home side.

Jay Rosehill and Cowick then both received ten minutes penalties for abuse of officials as the game slipped away from them, with Steelers taking the points in the end.
