REPORT: Clan tame Storm on the road for victory

Two goals from Colin Campbell helped Aspray Glasgow West sponsored Glasgow Clan to an excellent 5-1 road win against Manchester Storm to make it a three point weekend.

Clan were missing Nolan LaPorte (injury) and Mitch Jones (Covid protocol), but had enough to see themselves past the Storm and take another good road win.

The tone was set by an early fight between Clan captain Dyson Stevenson and former Glasgow D-man Linden Springer inside the first three minutes.

But it was the visitors who got the opening goal as Colin Campbell executed a finish shorthanded while Liam Stenton sat in the box for a trip.

Clan had a powerplay chance when Cam Critchlow took a seat for slashing, but, like their opponents, managed to find the net with a man down.

Curtis Hamilton set up Scott Simmonds and Manchester were level at 1-1 with eight minutes left to play in the first.

Netminder Shane Starrett, who took home the man of the match accolades, denied Ryan Finnerty’s side with a string of assured saves as Clan felt the pressure a little.

Dallas Ehrhardt was given a five plus game penalty for a check to the head early in the second, giving Glasgow a big five minute powerplay, but Storm stayed strong.

While Starrett continued to frustrate the offensive Manchester lines, the game turned in the latter end of the second period.

On-form Mathieu Roy scored his fourth goal of the season with a stunning effort, then 47 seconds later, Clan opened up a two-goal lead as Quinn O’Brien scored his first ever professional goal.

Now chasing the game, Manchester came out snarling in the third and created some early pressure without really doing anything with it.

But once more, Clan were celebrating as Campbell picked up his second of the game to go 4-1 ahead with nine minutes remaining to all but settle the game.

Rodney Southam picked his first pro goal on an empty net as Storm went for it by pulling the goalie in an attempt to claw something back out of the contest.

It was a good performance as Malcolm Cameron’s men completed the weekend on a high and set them up nicely for Tuesday’s visit by Fife Flyers.
