Braehead Clan picked up their first win in the Challenge Cup and kept their quarter final hopes alive as they beat in-form Dundee Stars 3-1.

Clan did well in nullifying the threat of the Dundee attack in the first period, with the defence performing well when called upon.

But the home team got the breakthrough when Stars goalie Joe Fallon couldn’t hold Alex Leavitt’s shot, leaving Corey Cowick to flick the puck into the net.

Michal Zajkowski made an excellent double save at the end of the first when he denied Scott Brannon then Matt White in quick succession to preserve the net.

A more defensive second period was played out as Zajkowski and Fallon were called upon on numerous occasions.

Clan’s goalie did well in making another double save, denying both Vinny Scarsella and Cale Tanaka.

But Stars captain Joey Sides managed to breach the Clan goal, firing his shot past the home goalie to equalise.

There wasn’t much between the teams in the third period, but it was the home side that left it late to make the breakthrough as Matt Beca squeezed the puck under Fallon for the lead.

Then Matt Keith applied the icing on the cake when he scored an empty net goal to confirm the victory – Clan’s first at home this season.
