ON THIS DAY: September 20th

September 20, 2021

It’s time to look back on a couple more games in Clan’s history and today, we are looking back on two that took place on this very day.

We’re off to Cardiff again for a 2014 clash then it’s a relatively short hop to Tayside for a Challenge Cup meeting with Dundee Stars a year later.

GAMES

2014: Cardiff Devils 5 Braehead Clan 4 (After Overtime – Elite League)

We actually had to make sure we weren’t repeating yesterday’s game against the Devils, but alas, no, it was the same scoreline as yesterday’s game with Clan beat in overtime.

It was another long trip for Ryan Finnerty and his team to the Welsh capital and it was a good start as Derek Roehl opened the scoring.

Andrew Lord and Tyson Marsh turned the scoreline around, with Andrew Hotham adding a third before the end of the first period.

Ryan Kavanagh pulled one back for the visitors, but it all kicked when Carl Hudson committed a check to the head to earn a game penalty. This riled Zack Fitzgerald enough to get involved and he had his night ended prematurely as well by fighting and being the aggressor.

This led to Cardiff’s fourth through Lord, but Matt Haywood was on target to bring the score down a little more before Scott Aarssen struck on the powerplay to restore parity and take the game to overtime.

Joey Haddad got the all-important winner in the extra period to leave Clan beaten in the end.

2015: Dundee Stars 2 Braehead Clan 1 (Challenge Cup)

Braehead Clan, under Finnerty, were on the road to Dundee to take on a Stars team with high hopes under their new coach, Marc LeFebvre.

A victory on Tayside is always welcomed, but despite having four more skaters than Dundee, Clan ended up on the losing side in this Challenge Cup contest.

The Dundee goals had a taste of the Clan about them as Mikael Lidhammar, later to wear the purple a few years later, gave Stars the perfect start with a goal after 93 seconds.

The first period with their second as Bobby Chaumont, a former Clan forward, struck to make it 2-0 with the goal that proved to be the game winner.

Matt Keith netted with 12 minutes to go in the third period and despite Justin Faryna and Chris Bruton squaring up and scrapping shortly after, Stars hung on to take the victory.
