ON THIS DAY: September 18th

September 18, 2021

Today is a special day in our daily look back of games from the past.

While we’re off to Edinburgh for a 2016 contest – and who didn’t love a trip to Murrayfield – we’re also revisiting the game where it all began for the Clan.

GAMES

2010: Dundee Stars 3 Braehead Clan 5 (Elite League/Challenge Cup)

After all the talk, all the build up, the big day was finally here as Braehead Clan played their first ever game in Dundee Ice Arena.

Up against the fellow Elite League new boys, it was the first real opportunity for player-coach Bruce Richardson to see the team he’d assembled and they delivered.

It was quite the occasion, especially when Cedric Bernier and Sean McMorrow got into a fight barely four minutes into the game.

The tone had been set and it wasn’t long before Brendan Cook scored Clan’s first ever goal – a shorthanded one – from Bobby Chaumont’s assist.

Dominic Noel added a second in the middle period to increase the lead, but the Stars pegged their way back, equalising through two goals from Brent Hughes and Michal Beca.

A cracker of a third period followed and Jon Landry edged Braehead in front again, quickly followed by Chaumont a minute later before he added Clan’s fifth after 51 minutes.

They looked out of sight of the Stars and although Peter Cartwright scored a third for Dundee, it was the new team from Glasgow who came out on top.

It didn’t end there though when frustrations boiled over in the final stages as Brent Hughes and Mark Nebus of Dundee along with Clan pair Kyle Bruce and Landry all engaged in some fisticuffs.

After all that, it was official. The Clan were here.

2016: Edinburgh Capitals 3 Braehead Clan 2 (Challenge Cup)

A Sunday night Challenge Cup tie in Murrayfield was never a comfortable thing at times and so this proved to be as Caps player-coach Michal Dobron picked up a hard fought win over their Glasgow rivals.

Five goals were shared between them, but the Caps did enough to claim the points and end the weekend on a high note for them. Maybe not so much for Ryan Finnerty and his team.

It started so well for the Clan when Matt Keith put them in front within the opening couple of minutes, but Edinburgh were level later in the session through Matt Tipoff.

A powerplay goal for the home side as Trevor Hendrix and Keith sat for roughing came as Pavel Vorobyev took advantage to give them the lead.

Braehead hit back through Scott Pitt a few minutes later – also with the man advantage – and going into the third period, the contest was on a knife edge.

It went all the way to overtime where Capitals settled the game, again on a powerplay, after Lee Baldwin was given a 2+2 for an accidental high stick. That man Vorobyev would be the man to take the acclaim.
