ON THIS DAY: November 17th

November 17, 2021

For the most part, we’ve not got far to travel in today’s round-up of games of the past – barring the somewhat long journey to Cardiff.

It’s another day where we’ve lots of goals to look back from, a little bit of revenge in one case and good memories.

2012: Braehead Clan 5 Coventry Blaze 2 (Elite League)

Yet another meeting with the Blaze in November meant Paul Thompson and his men had to travel north on league duty and it turned into a good night for the Clan.

It was tight for most of the first period until Robert Farmer got a powerplay goal against his old team to put Braehead ahead.

Matt Beleskey levelled early in the second, but Clan started to find a rhythm as Drew Miller restored the lead, added in the final session by Jordan Krestanovich.

Sam Smith pulled Coventry to within one with ten minutes to go, but Krestanovich shorthanded and an empty net finish by Jade Galbraith completed the job.

2013: Cardiff Devils 1 Braehead Clan 2 (Elite League)

Clan made the almost 400-mile journey to South Wales to take on Cardiff Devils a day after the hard fought win over Hull Stingrays and prevailed to take another two points.

This wasn’t the Cardiff team we know now and amidst turmoil off the ice and it was the first game since Gerad Adams decided to hang up his skates and concentrate on coaching.

Within five minutes, the Devils were one down as Matt Towe opened the scoring with as assist coming from Shane Lust.

Then Chris Frank netted a rare goal on a delayed penalty at the halfway point give Cardiff something of a challenge in the second half of the game.

However, it wasn’t to be as Ryan Finnerty’s men held on for victory, despite a late Mac Faulkner finish in the last second on a five-on-three powerplay, denying Kyle Jones a shutout.

2018: Glasgow Clan 6 Milton Keynes Lightning 3 (Elite League)

It was a third game in four days for the Clan and a second meeting in that time against Milton Keynes Lightning, where revenge was on the menu.

Clan were still smarting from the 6-1 loss at MK a few days before and were determined that wouldn’t happen again as Pete Russell came up against his old club.

Matt Beca got the ball rolling with the opening goal after 15 minutes and when Michael Fine scored an equaliser, it triggered a three-goal blitz from the home team.

Scott Pitt, Travis Ehrhardt and Beca, with his second sent the Clan into a 4-1 lead, with Josh Gratton adding a fifth early in the third.

Two quick fire responses from Georgs Golovkovs and Fine’s second closed the gap, but Gratton’s shorthanded finish seven minutes from the end made sure of glory for the Clan.

2019: Glasgow Clan 8 Sheffield Steelers 5 (Elite League)

It was another high scoring affair between the Clan and the Steelers under Zack Fitzgerald, but it was one that ended in favour of the home team, scoring eight of the 13 goals served up.

Jack Musil opened the scoring early on, which was cancelled out by Robert Dowd before Scott Pitt and Chad Rau opened up a 3-1 lead. Brendan Connolly pulled one back for Steelers minutes later.

Anthony DeLuca equalised for Aaron Fox’s side, but Clan opened up a three-goal lead as three goals in just over two and a half minutes flew in, thanks to Travis Ehrhardt, Rasmus Bjerrum and Mikael Lidhammar.

Pitt made it 7-3 to all about secure victory and despite Nikolai Lemtyugov and Lucas Sandstrom clawing two more back, Bjerrum’s second late on was the icing on the cake.
