ON THIS DAY: November 14th

November 14, 2021

Not as busy as yesterday, but three games are on the menu today as Clan visit Belfast and Milton Keynes and entertain Sheffield Steelers at home as well.

There were goals galore in each of the games and while the results weren’t always the right outcomes, they always kept you invested.

2010: Belfast Giants 4 Braehead Clan 2 (Elite League/Challenge Cup)

Clan’s latest trip to Belfast didn’t quite go as planned as Doug Christiansen’s side took Elite League and Challenge Cup points, leaving it late to do the damage.

Brad Smyth for the Giants and Dominic Noel traded goals in the first period, with Smyth’s second edging the home side in front before the end of the second session.

Braehead’s captain Brendan Cook (above) pulled them level just after the restart and the game look destined for the extra period.

However Belfast were having none of it as Brett Hemingway scored with two minutes to go, with Jeff Mason finishing things off with the empty netter.

2015: Braehead Clan 8 Sheffield Steelers 9 (After penalty shots – Elite League)

Probably the most bonkers game of ice hockey Braehead Arena has ever seen. Even the poor chap writing the match report still breaks out in a cold sweat over this game.

It’s the game with the most goals in Clan history and we’re not going to list all the scorers from this crazy game, but when you take into account the first period saw Clan lead 4-3, it gives you a fair idea.

Stefan Meyer and Brendan Brooks scored doubles in this meeting between the two and not only that, both teams couldn’t be separated at eight each, needing overtime then penalty shots.

Chris Lawrence scored the penalty shot to win it for the Steelers after Meyer had missed his to end a night that left the Braehead crowd’s heads spinning after.

2018: Milton Keynes Lightning 6 Glasgow Clan 1 (Elite League)

This televised clash was given the perfect build-up as Milton Keynes, who had a terrible start to the season, dramatically sacked their coach Doug McKay on the morning of this game.

Senior players Tim Wallace and Ryan Lannon were tasked with taking the team on and what a night they had as they romped to a 6-1 win at Pete Russell’s Clan’s expense.

Robbie Baillargeon and Wallace put them two up before Matt Stanisz pulled one back for the Clan on the powerplay.

MK added to their score with two more from Wallace to complete his hat-trick, but Glasgow’s frustrations started to show as Zack Fitzgerald and Cole Shudra fought late in the second, both earning an early finish to their games.

The night didn’t improve for the visitors as Eric Neiley and Georgs Golovkovs scored a further two to inflict further misery on the Clan.
