NEWS: Roy warns of final Fife hurdle

April 16, 2022

Aspray Glasgow West sponsored Glasgow Clan forward Mathieu Roy has urged caution over a Fife Flyers team with nothing to play for.

The Kirkcaldy side are out of the play-offs and will end their season against the Clan in a double header, looking to finish on a high note at Glasgow’s expense.

And Roy has highlighted the need to win the games to give them the best possible chance of finishing higher up the table in a rivalry he rates highly.

“A team that don’t have anything more to play for can play a bit looser, but Fife will want the wins so we have to have a good Saturday and take advantage of their three-in-three this weekend,” he said.

“There’s no doubt we have our work cut out and Fife have won some big games. It’s definitely one the fans will look forward to.

“This rivalry definitely compares with Panthers and Steelers games because you can feel it around the fans. The games are always fun to play and I’m certainly looking forward to.

“With the standings so tight right now, you can control what you can do so we need to win our games and see where everything stands. For us, we need to win both this weekend.”

Clan come into the game on the back of confidence-boosting 2-0 win over Sheffield Steelers, with Roy finally scoring against his old team for the first time this season.

But he paid tribute to netminder Shane Starrett, who posted his second shutout of the season and Roy revealed he rates his team-mate highly.

“The result on Wednesday was great for us and a lot of people it was a dead rubber, but in this league, there’s no such thing and we wanted to bring a winning attitude going into the play-offs,” he added.

“It was a big win for the boys and the vibe is there with us right now. We’ve got a big weekend coming up and need to win those so we know what we need to do.

“Shane Starrett is the backbone of our team and no doubt, we need him to help us win. He loves the game and we love him.

“We know he’s there for us and he made some big saves. He’s been there every game and he’s up there among one of the best goalies I’ve played with. Every time we go out, we know we have a chance with him there.”
