Aspray Glasgow West sponsored Glasgow Clan are among the top 100 best supported clubs in Europe during the 2021/22 season.

With fans back in arenas across Europe, the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) have released a list of the clubs and their attendances, with Clan nestled in at number 62 in the list with an average crowd of 2,772.

It’s an incredible achievement for the club on the back of the Covid pandemic and the delayed start to the season because of the protracted negotiation over Braehead Arena.

Clan Managing Director Gareth Chalmers spoke of his delight and pride at seeing the club in such esteemed company and paid tribute to the Purple Army for their contribution.

“While totally acknowledging this year’s figures are vastly driven by Coronavirus restrictions, we are still delighted to be the 62nd best supported club in Europe and when you consider the obstacles we had to get over, it’s a positive end to the season,” he said.

“We always pondered how we would look on the back of the pandemic and this fully justifies the work that’s gone into restoring the Clan in the hearts and minds of the people of Glasgow and surrounding areas.

“I want to thank the Purple Army for returning in their numbers and bringing the atmosphere back, as well as their continued support throughout the tough times.

“I’ve been on record as recognising them as being the best fans in the league and that continues to be the case.

“I also want to thank the staff for their work in promoting the games through our own channels and when you consider we launched the live web stream in January, it’s very encouraging for the future.”

Clan roared up the list from 125th in 2020 and are the fifth highest UK team, behind Sheffield Steelers (6th overall), Nottingham Panthers (27th), Belfast Giants (37th) and Cardiff Devils (55th).

Swiss side SC Bern were top of the list with an average attendance on 13,348 in 2021/22.
