Glasgow Clan 1 Sheffield Steelers 5

Glasgow Clan have a big job on their hands to turn this Challenge Cup tie around after going down 5-1 to Sheffield Steelers in this first leg clash.

Three days after Steelers took a 7-3 league win, both sides met again for the fifth time in 25 days in a hard fought game between them,

New signing Marcus Jonsson made his debut after receiving his clearance to play and made a good impression in a tough game for him to come into.

There were no goals in the first period, but the best chance fell to Mikael Lidhammar, who was loitering around the crease, but couldn’t find a way past Steelers netminder Tomas Duba.

Steelers opened the scoring early in the second as Ben O’Connor’s shot was stopped by Patrick Killeen, but spilled in front of him where Marc-Olivier Vallerand was there to take advantage.

Clan responded with an equaliser a couple of minutes later as Lidhammar drifted in from the left and delivered a finish past Duba and the tie was level after two periods.

Sheffield got the perfect start to the third when Tanner Eberle’s early shot flew into the net from the left side, catching the Clan cold.

Glasgow tried to get one back quickly as Nolan LaPorte was denied with a double effort and Scott Tanski was denied from close range.

The visitors weathered that storm and were 3-1 ahead as a shot from Michael Davies took a touch from Eberle on its way in and the scoreline started to swing in one direction.

John Armstrong added a fourth with a finish at the back post after an excellent pass from his captain Jonathan Phillips.

Then Lucas Sandstrom wrapped things up with four minutes to go with a well struck effort that beat Killeen and Sheffield firmly took the advantage from Glasgow to the second leg in a couple of weeks time.
